Baltimore's Gardens of Hope
|
Since 1997 The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) has been a partner in the Gardens of Hope Project, an urban gardening program located in Baltimore’s Upton community. The project is co-sponsored by the Upton Planning Committee.
Sharing food has always been a traditional part of Italian culture. Participating in Gardens of Hope is a great opportunity to extend this tradition to a community that can benefit greatly from this type of outreach.
The garden is located on what was once a demolished stretch of row houses. Now the year-round project is enhancing the community by helping beautify the neighborhood and assist the area’s less fortunate. Participants in the garden include local youth groups and neighborhood gardeners; periodically, homeless persons are hired to help with garden maintenance.
In the last two years the project has yielded 5,000 pounds of fresh produce to area soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and churches.
It takes more than soil and seeds to make a garden grow. In order to continue serving the community with this garden project we need your help. To donate to the Gardens of Hope please contact Rebecca at 202-939-3117 or Rebecca@niaf.org.
